The Guns of August
It’s hard for me to post these last days. Since I was a child I have been fascinated with war and strategy and history. And now to my great horror I see the evil unfolding again. Sauron has returned, the Four Horsemen are upon us. Israel drops leaflets telling civilians they will be bombed if they try to flee by car, but flee they must. Hezbollah announces that any Muslims in Haifa should flee or faced the consequences. Why do so many people have such a hard time understanding that this is insane? Two schoolyard bullies with missiles and jet bombers. There are no good guys here, except for the innocents dying on either side of the border.
In the 20th century people at least recognized that armies should at least try to avoid killing civilians. Now we are back to “anyone who gets in the way will be killed?” This is progress? This is civilization? Telling civilians to “flee or die” is ethnic cleansing. Now both sides are guilty of it. Shall we go for genocide next? This is Satan’s work, that’s what this is.
“The Guns of August” refers to the beginning of the great war, the war to save civilization, the war to end all wars, world war one. “Home by Christmas: was the popular cry as that war started, most everyone thought that their side’s armies would make short work of the war. Wrong. 20 million died in that glorious little war, but the lesson didn’t sink in. Here we are again nearly a century later, and nothing has changed. Both sides escalate, convinced God and logic and civilization is on their side. Both sides are full of bloody shit.
God help us all. Please.
