About

“Now, my own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. I have read and heard many attempts at a systematic account of it, from materialism and theosophy to the Christian system or that of Kant, and I have always felt that they were much too simple. I suspect that there are more things in heaven and earth that are dreamed of, or can be dreamed of, in any philosophy. That is the reason why I have no philosophy myself, and must be my excuse for dreaming.”

John Burden Sanderson Haldane (1892-1964) English geneticist.

This Blog

My mission is to share my opinions on the world around us, my wonder at the same; all expressed in such a ways that even should people disagree, they will not take offence. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes my emotions get the better of me, especially when I discuss war. So be it, if any offence is taken, none was meant.

Header Picture

Two Canadian soldiers sitting on a German V-1 “buzz bomb,” somewhere in England in late 1944. The V-1 was the first operational cruise missile, used as a terror weapon against England in the waning days of World War Two. It was a remarkable achievement, but of little or no military significance. It was guided, so it could be aimed roughly at London. It was relatively easy to shoot down with fighter aircraft or even anti aircraft guns. I thought it was a neat picture for two reasons. First it ties together war and science nicely, and for all I know the two fellows are discussing philosophy. Secondly, assuming that is an actual crashed buzz bomb, these guys are pretty nonchalant considering they are sitting on nearly a ton of high explosive.
