Rumours, Pandemics, War Crimes, and Virgin Lizards

The Virgin Flora?

Well, here’s a lovely rumour. It is alleged that the US has been burying mercenaries and green card holders in mass graves in Iraq. My first take is that this is in the same class as the theory that Donald Rumsfeld personally placed the demolition charges in the twin towers, but thought I’d pass it along. There have been persistent rumours that the USA was under-reporting its own casualties since the very beginning of the war, so it’s not completely beyond the realm of possibility. And as an example that it’s best to keep an open mind about what is really going on in the world, much worse crimes have been concealed throughout history.

A health expert claims that a global flu pandemic could claim 62 millions lives, the 1918 flu pandemic killed about 50 million people. That’s like predicting that future hurricanes could kill a lot of people and cause a lot of damage, it took an expert to predict this? One of the interesting tidbits about the 1918 pandemic is that more Americans died of the flu in October of 1918 than all the war battle deaths in the twentieth century. About 500,000 Americans died of the flu that month, it was too awful to even think about, which is why it’s barely mentioned in the history books. I have a friend whose grandfather came from a large family of like a dozen kids, half of them died in one week. I don’t even want to imagine what that must have been like.

An esteemed reader sent me a curious link. It’s actually quite a long read, so read at your own risk. It makes some interesting points, I would have to essentially agree with the historical analysis. Then it goes on to use history to justify further American invasions and wars in the middle east. Which is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. It takes an uncommon mind to warp history enough to make a case that destroying the Syrian and Iranian governments will fix the mess the USA created by destroying Saddam’s Baathist government and the Taliban. Still, an interesting read, I have seen other things along the same line that I will post by and by.

The Marines are prosecuting a pile of people for the Haditha massacre. I certainly have to say that’s an improvement over Vietnam, where exactly one person was convicted of war crimes during the entire war. That these crimes even happens shows just what a mess we have created in Iraq, and it shows just how overstretched and stressed our troops are. When I was in the service in the seventies Arabs were already referred to as “towel heads,” I kinda suspect it hasn’t gotten any better since then. Kudos the the people who decided to prosecute this and other crimes, justice equals hope.

In more End Times news, a Komodo Dragon is expected to have a virgin birth soon. Or a virgin egg hatching as the case may be, the point is that Flora impregnated herself, there was no male Komodo Dragon involved. This type of conception is called parthenogenesis, and is frequently observed in lizards, though never in Komodo Dragons before. There are a few small lizard species where there are no males, and the species reproduces entirely by this method. It’s been observed in turkeys I believe, but that’s about it, never in any mammals for example. The offspring of such births are always female, since there was no male to contribute any DNA.

There is one recorded historical instance of a virgin birth in mammals though, a certain well known prophet is claimed to have literally been born from a virgin mother. Was this an example of parthenogenesis in humans? It has been suggested as a “logical” explanation for the birth of our saviour. If true, this would mean that our saviour was biologically female. I kinda doubt that our saviour was a female cross dresser, but it would certainly put an interesting spin on a lot of Christian dogma. Put that in your Christmas stocking and think about it.

Happy Holidays All!

  1. here’s some video from a pandemic panel discussion that took place in Washington DC:

i don’t think expert predictions of large numbers of deaths are the takeaway. i think the takeaway is our general lack of preparedness globally, nationally, and locally. how do the experts get the rest of us to pay attention? the goal is not to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to prevent something that may or may not happen. but if we spend a little now (money and time, training), that will go a long way to curbing the damage of an epidemic. we can never prevent one, but we can minimize the damage with a little forethought.
