Stunning scientific breakthrough…

Bush has allowed the military in Iraq to “kill Iranians” that are aiding insurgents. Um, were American forces being very careful not to shoot at insurgents until they were sure of their nationality? Of course not, so effectively this order means absolutely dipsquat as far as fighting the insurgency in Iraq. So why did Bush make such a big deal about this? To further demonize Iran and condition the American public for the upcoming war he will launch on Iran. The man truly is a one trick pony, this is no different than the year he spent making sure every time he said 911 he mentioned Saddam, to make sure people connected the two. Of course Saddam was no more responsible for 911 than Iran is responsible for the insurgency in Iraq, but reality is an inconvenient truth when one is trying to justify a war of aggression.

In another fun spot, NATO is going to send more troops to Afghanistan. And I bet the lucky troops and their families are just thrilled to be sent to prop up Karzai, a man so popular with his own people that he is protected by hundreds of American special forces at all times. Will this make any difference? Yes, more westerners will come home in body bags and more Afghanis will take up arms against the western occupation forces and their quislings. Gotta love how they portray sending more occupation troops to Afghanistan as “sending more economic and military assistance to Afghanistan.” Ah, the era of the benevolent conqueror, just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That’s the problem with basing wars on propaganda, even the leaders start to believe the lies they are telling. It goes downhill from that point.

There is of course more violence and American air raids in Somalia. Here though, at least we have achieved what we set out to achieve. Turning Somalia back into a failed state. This will of course generate more terrorism and thus more support for America’s world wide military Empire at home. The fact that ultimately strategic over-extension will destroy the Empire is besides the point, and with any luck that can be blamed on the Democrats and the liberals. And it’s not like the profits made by the war machine are going to go away, they are safely being siphoned off to off shore accounts in the Caribbean.

Sigh. In somewhat less global news, a woman in California fought off a mountain lion that was attacking her husband. He’s cut up pretty bad, but will survive. The mountain lion in question was hunted down and killed, at least we hope it was the guilty lion. While some people think more should be done to “protect” people from mountain lions, in actuality the increasing rate of attacks in recent years both isn’t the lion’s fault, and is a good sign to boot. Say what? Well, for one thing people have been building more and more subdivisions in lion country, so an increase in contact with lions was inevitable. And a healthy lion population keeps the deer population under control. Far more people are killed in car accidents with deer than are ever hurt by lions, plus deer spread Lyme disease, which is not a nice thing. My heart goes out to he families and friends of lion victims, but in the greater scheme of things, society benefits from a healthy lion population.

And in breaking and world shaking science news, a researcher has discovered a way to make caffeinated doughnuts. Each doughnut or piece of pastry will contain the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee, no more need to risk scalding to get one’s caffeine fix. Can the nicotine doughnut be far behind? Stay tuned.
