Politics in America, or Why We Are Doomed

I saw a news headline today that did further damage to my already scarred brain:

GOP fears war could help Dems for years

That’s right, that’s exactly what it says. A war that has maimed and killed hundreds of thousand of people, displaced millions of people, left a nation in ruins, and cost hundreds of billions of dollars…and the Republicans are worried about the political cost to themselves? I hardly even know what to say, presumably the Democrats are the flip side of the coin and are equally pleased that the war will help them win elections for years. I couldn’t illustrate better why America is doomed, all our leaders care about is their political careers. We need to wake up as a country and recognize that our government has turned into a malignant cancerous growth that hasn’t even tried to do it’s job for decades.

Sigh. While I am ruining people’s days, here is a wonderful report on how rife corruption is in Iraq and how much money has been misspent. Yeah, they really needed an Olympic sized pool in Baghdad. Speaking of Iraq, the recent “battle” in Najaf is looking more and more problematic. First it was claimed that it was insurgents trying to kill Sistani, then the story changed to it was some sort of Doomsday cult. Now it looks like it may simply have been an ugly massacre, and the other stories were desperate attempts to cover up murderous incompetence in the Iraqi and US militaries.

There is good news though. The International War Crimes Tribunal is going to try it’s first defendant. One criminal in five years, at this rate the world’s war criminals will be dead for centuries before they have to worry about being brought to justice. God help us all, because our leaders sure aren’t going to.

  1. Doug,

Where did you get the news that Najaf was another ugly massacre covered up by main stream media? I am not paying much attention on internet news and you know CNN and BBC never reported this incident of destroying of a cult.

  3. The whole mess dropped quickly off the radar once it became clear it wasn’t the amazing victory over evil insurgents it was originally portrayed as. It’s no wonder many Americans are so confused and misinformed about Iraq, all they ever get is the Pentagon spin story du jour from the MSM. JMO –Doug

  4. I have no love for either party. The Democrats including Clinton and Edwards are as responsible as anyone. As a Senator, you are supposed to be informed on the issues and think it through.

Our current situation was so predictable. Yea, “I told you so” back in early 2003. Here we had a thug stabilizing a nation that would otherwise be in civil war, persecuting fundamentalists, keeping Iran in check and providing some occasisional live fire exercises for our military.

Now we have killed a few thousand of our own and many more Iraqis. Not to mention the severe bodily and mental trauma. The region is dangerously destabiized. We have alienated our allies and created new enemies. Our Army is severely damaged. We are bleeding money we don’t have in the billions. And no end in sight.

The least they could do is let me in on when they will attack Iran so I can invest in oil futures.
