“Like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime,”

Well, do they make this stuff up or what? An American congressional delegation led by senator McCain visited an outdoor market in Baghdad to show the progress made in Iraq. Republican Mike Pence even offered the lovely observation above. Let me see if understand this, the market was sealed off, the congressmen were protected by dozens of armoured vehicles, attack helicopters, snipers, and hundreds of soldiers. And the congressmen wore body armour anyhow. And this is like Indiana in the summertime?

Are these people deluded? Are they insane? Do congressmen go to markets in the American Midwest protected by snipers and attack helicopters? I’m pretty sure that Indiana is little, if anything, like Baghdad. I just have a hard time grasping how anyone can take this sort of thing seriously.

Moving right along, I see in the headlines that the British sailors will be released. Good for them, and a clever move on Iran’s part. Costs them nothing to let them go, and there are plenty more potential prisoners where they got these ones from. I did pick up a few interesting tidbits reading about this story though. The sailors were most likely seized in retaliation for the American seizure of five Iranian diplomats in Iraq. The western media pretty much ignored that act, as it pretty much ignores all of America’s flagrant violation of international law. The other thing I discovered, is that there was a reason for the seizure of the American Embassy in 1979. The Americans plotted and ran the 1953 coup in Iran from the American Embassy when the US installed the Shah in power. So when the revolution happened and the Shah was deposed, they wanted to make damn sure that no other mischief was perpetrated by CIA personal in the American Embassy.

It was still illegal of course, but it wasn’t the random evil insanity that it is usually portrayed as. Especially among the pro war crowd. That’s one of the most ridiculous things about America’s war on grammar, most of the proponents of “America should rule the world by force” not only know virtually nothing about history, they can’t even be bothered to try and understand why other people do what they do. The actions of America’s enemies are always ascribed to some variation of “they are crazy evil religious nuts who delight in killing.” Then of course they wonder why many foreigners think the same thing about Americans. Insert rolled eyes here.

The more I study history, the more I understand why it’s a long litany of senseless violence and war. As Homer Simpson puts it “It’s easy to understand Marge…boys is stupid.”
