Staying in Iraq will eventually lead to victory the same way that increased spending, increased borrowing, and lowering taxes will eventually lead to prosperity
The premise that humanity is collectively insane sounds better to me all the time. Sigh. Anyhow. I have been turning this blog into a column and getting away from a blog format, but today is an old “thick and thin” column because there’s too many things I want to discuss. Plus it’s fun, I can rant and rave about whatever catches my eye. (And it’s easier than writing a single topic post, truth be told.)
I have beens switching to a column format because I want to write columns. Plus people are far more likely to link to a well written single topic post, and such posts generate lots of steady traffic. Steady traffics means new readers. New readers means new comments and new input. Which makes me think harder and write better posts. The great circle of something or other. Plus single column posts are usable later on if I decide to write a book. Which I have decided to do, suggestions welcome. I am thinking about a history book or a science book, or maybe a history of science book.
I am not going to write a book about Bush’s wars because I’m too upset about that mess as it is. A recent study said a million are dead in Iraq as a result of the invasion, but most Americans deny it or ignore it. Yet today high umbrage about a nightmarish suicide attack in Iraq apparently utilizing crazy women. High umbrage and ignorance, because if this was Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq, they just hurt their own cause tremendously. And the sooner the Iraqis get rid of Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq, the sooner they will get back to getting rid of us. Sadly, many Americans and even one of our top presidential candidates still live in fantasy world where Iraq is the same as South Korea or Germany, and someday our bases will magically be transformed into peaceful suburbs in friendly lands. Right. “Stay the course” in Iraq will eventually lead to victory the same way that increased spending, increased borrowing, and lowering taxes will eventually lead to prosperity.
Internet service in parts parts of the Middle East has been disrupted by repeated cutting of some sort of undersea cable in the Middle East. The authorities are saying its ship’s anchors doing the cutting, but even I, one of the least conspiracy oriented people on the planet, has to be a little suspicious. This is like when people shoot themselves in the back or multiple times…and it’s ruled a suicide. Hmm. Still, who knows what is going on. Could be a “test” by friendlies, could be Iranian frogmen, could be anyone. Could even be ship’s anchors, coincidences do happen.
Speaking of frogmen though, boy, I recently read about Italy’s elite frogman demolition unit during World War Two. While for the most part Italy’s forces fought rather poorly during the war, substandard equipment and complete lack of enthusiasm being the major reasons, their frogmen made up for it. These guys sank or disabled no less than 28 Allied warships, including battleships. Gotta admire that if you’re into the macho war thing. This is one of the things I am thinking of for my proposed history book, writing about true stories that illustrate how misleading so so much “common knowledge” about history (and by extension a lot of current events) is.
In the USA the bad economic news just keeps on coming. The only surprise would be if anyone is surprised by this. Our so called “leaders” in Washington have spent the last seven years distracting us with terror alerts while they took out every loan they could to spend on pork, using our grandchildren’s taxes as collateral. The USA’s paper debt has nearly doubled under Bush to nearly ten trillion dollars, and our structural debt, IE the promises the government has made, has ballooned to 53 trillion dollars. In other words, the American government is beyond bankrupt in every sense of the word. There’s only three ways this can turn out:
- Printing money, leading to runaway inflation.
- Staggering new taxes the likes of which we can’t imagine.
- Pretty much all government spending including social security being slashed or eliminated.
And of course the longer we continue on our merry way and pretend this problem doesn’t exist, the worse it will be when it all comes crashing down. Thud. OK, four ways. And I don’t see even a shred of evidence that any of the mainstream candidates fully comprehends the enormity of this situation, most Americans don’t. Bush and Congress sold us all into slavery to China while we were watching American Idol.
Have a great weekend everyone.
